Bisik is Ribongia’s second release from upcoming EP La Reunion.
Featuring the evocative vocals of polymorphic singer-songwriter Bastien Picot, the track captures the
bewitching spirit of the island on which it was written.
“Visually when I listen to this tune I see the Reunioneese landscape with these epic mountains and rainforests,” Ribongia says. “La Reunion island is like the Lost World, it’s a powerful volcanic island with this mystical atmosphere.”
Picot, who lives between the island of La Reunion and Paris wrote about how he feels when he returns to the island after his stints “in the cold of the continent”.
Opening with the sound of water lapping on the shore, Bisik kicks in at an easy lope featuring native Maloyan instrument, the satie to create a moving swing under the electronica, building to an ecstatic, multi-voiced celebration at the end.
“It’s about leaving your place of birth in the bid to find something better, only to realise that where you came from is probably the best place you’ll ever know,” says Ribongia.
Named after a tiny volcanic island off the coast of Madagascar, La Reunion is the first in a 3 EP series: Les Rencontres de L'Océan Indien (Meetings from the Indian Ocean). Each EP in the series will feature collaborations with artists from the islands of La Reunion, Rodrigues and Mauritius.
Picot’s tribal pop sensibility is the perfect compliment to Ribongia’s special brand of left-of-field electronica, and fans of the celebrated Italian-Australian producer won’t be disappointed by this special little track.
