I.O is the first release from Ribongia’s upcoming EP, La Reunion. Named after a tiny volcanic island off the coast of Madagascar, La Reunion is the first in a 3 EP series: Les Rencontres de L'Océan Indien (Meetings from the Indian Ocean). Each EP in the series will feature collaborations with artists from the islands of La Reunion, Rodrigues and Mauritius.
It’s been an uncharacteristically long time between tracks for relentlessly innovative electronic artist, Ribongia. Following the success of his debut album M∆∆T, the globe-trotting producer is gearing up for yet another boundary-breaking release - this time from his island residence in Mauritius.
The new instrumental track distills Ribongia’s experience of leaving behind modern city life for a small island in the Indian Ocean. “La Reunion island is like the Lost World,” says Ribongia. “It’s a powerful volcanic island with this mystical atmosphere. I picture I.O as the soundtrack to my arrival. Imagine yourself standing on the shores and breathing in that mystical atmosphere.”
Known for his sonic surprises, the celebrated Italian-Australian producer’s fresh release won’t disappoint those with a hankering for some quality left-of-field electronica. In true Ribongia style, the new track lands from out of nowhere - in the best possible way.
“As a producer, I sometimes think I should make more instrumental tracks. In a weird way they seem to speak more sincerely about who I am as an Artist. It’s a difficult concept to articulate to be honest, but when I listen to these types of instrumentals, I think they make me like myself more.”
As the planet introspects under pandemic restrictions, so too has Ribongia created a soundscape that captures a very specific moment of change in his internal world. It’s a moment recalled as a direct response to the new landscape that for now, he calls home.
Ribongia’s 2018 debut album M∆∆T has been described as “a musical masterpiece...innovative and incredibly left-of-field” (Amnplify) and “Global bass music executed with ruthless precision,” (Triple J).
So don’t be lulled into a false sense of silence from the envelope-pushing producer. I.O. marks the beginning of a new wave. And it will take you to another world.
