about

After covering while re-inventing Satisfaction by the Rolling Stones with Australian/Mauritan Artist Jason Heerah, Ribongia returns with a new Seggae cover of the wildly successful hit of 2011 by Australian Artist Gotye and New Zeland Singer Kimbra.

‘Somebody That I Used To now’ dropping 26th of August 2022, is yet again a brilliant Interpretation of a brilliant piece of sonic art.

The track opens with a west African Balafon reminiscing of Wally de Becker’s (Gotye) xylophone melody while the sound design elements of the track seduce the listener by creating an exotic and mysterious scenario.

Emmanuel Des Roches, Incredible young Mauritian Artist delivers the verse with an omniscient tone that sets the mood for the nostalgic words that seep with bitter sweetness.

As the song starts picking up momentum the delivery seems to turn from sad to slightly angrier and painful climaxing with the introduction of the song instrumental hook.

A vintage Synth blares out the song’s motif creating dark rave cave type of atmosphere that perfectly accompanies the rhythm section lead by Jason Heerah on Drums and Italian notorious bass player Piero Spitilli.

The groove in typical Seggae triplet driven tempo receives a clubbier treatment with an almost disco bass flare and a driving 4/4 beat. Its clear, we’re in for a treat.

Emmanuel’s story telling like 2nd verse locks in with the tight groove delivering a second line that is both confession and statement.

The Chorus hits home by appealing to audiences worldwide that had to endure the grieving of a broken relationship. While the lyrical content is raw and emotional the tone has changed to one of surrender accentuated by the falsetto notes.

Cleverly the second hook part of the song introduces Jamaican Dub sound effects that for the first time are called upon in the genre of Seggae. Its clear the Ribongia is pushing genre boundaries by for the first time introducing the notion of what could be Seggae-Dub.

To further dive in the style Sanaa’s verse is breath taking. The young Mauritian (recently back from 3 years of Chinese Tours) is here to leave a mark. this simply an other pin in the board for the 26 year old singer.

Her delivery is impeccable with a pinch of R’n’B Queen thrown in for safe measure.

The pair meet on the final chorus that will sure make you want to start the journey all over.
